How to Become a NYS Security Guard
Thank you for your interest in a career in Security. It’s quite fulfilling to help protect what’s important to people. Here’s some of the info
you need and what you can expect to pay:
NY State Requirements

You Must:
- Be 18 years old.
- Have a current NYS photo driver’s license or non-driver ID card.
- Have not been convicted of a serious criminal offense.
- Complete the NY 8-Hour Pre-assignment Course ($100).
- Get digitally fingerprinted ($108).
- Submit a completed application and the required fee to the Department of State ($36).
Before you can renew your license, which is good for 2 years, you do have to take extra training including:
- 16-Hour On the job training course
- 8-Hour In Service course every year
To get licensed as an Armed Security Guard you will also need to compete a 47-Hour Firearms Training. This class is $750 and you will also need to provide your own ammunition (apprx. 500 rounds).
